06.22-23 10 am - 5 pm
Kathleen Klech has redefined travel photography over her 25 year career as the Director of Photography at Condé Nast Traveler. Bringing in a guest photographer who has worked for Kathleen for many years, Kathleen and her photographer will cover the ins and outs of travel photography and how to execute when on assignment. Each student will have the opportunity to have their work individually reviewed by Kathleen and discussed in an open forum.
Jocelyn Miller, a long time photo editor and colleague of Kathleen's, will explore with the class the many new multimedia platforms available to photographers; the merger of editorial photography and the multi-faceted i-Apps//web platforms. Jocelyn will workshop photographers portfolios individually with the aim of helping photographers find new avenues for their work. Having been a photo editor at Condé Nast Traveler for more than ten years, Jocelyn has been at the forefront of the changing dynamic of editorial photography and the new opportunities and challenges that professional photographers face. This workshop will lay out these new applications and opportunities for working editorial photographers with a specific focus on travel photography.
Producing a Photo Book: From Design to Publication
Taught by: Award-winning designer Giorgio Baravalle of de.MO
Award-winning documentary photographer, Marc Asnin- ApplyPrice : $599
06.22-23 10 am - 5 pm
Targeted to students and professionals interested in producing a photo book, this workshop will explore and explain a successful collaboration between book designer/publisher and photographer. After working together for more than four years, Giorgio Baravalle of de.MO and award-winning documentary photographer Marc Asnin have successfully created the highly acclaimed photo book Uncle Charlie, nominated at Paris Photo for Best First Book Award. Asnin and Baravalle offer a workshop that will take students through the collaborative process of a book designer and photographer eventually leading to successful publication and distribution.
Participants will be asked to bring photographic work so that they can learn how to best assemble, edit and present their work, culminating in the creation of a dummy book. Template proposals are abundant, but if your aim is to reach a broader audience, our "break the rules" approach is one well worth exploring. Marc and Giorgio will ask the participants to push the boundaries of their knowledge in order to create a new and interesting presentation of their work. This process will include the following : How to choose a designer. How to navigate the editing process. How to use the written word to support images. How to use typography. How to present to a publisher.
Arousing discussions and critiques will enable participants to rethink conventional approaches. Concrete information will be provided with plenty of time for individual assessment. This will be a hands-on workshop.
On Assignment w/ Mia Diehl
Taught by: Mia Diehl, Director of Photography, Fortune Magazine- ApplyPrice : $599
Coming This Fall
Capturing the idea or metaphor an image is to convey is both a creative and a conceptual process. Conceptual photography, especially when in the form of an editorial assignment, can be just as much a problem solving endeavor as it is an imaginative and creative one. The best photographs are often solutions to problems. Having grown in its application and breadth, conceptual photography is a broad umbrella including portraiture, still life, fashion, documentary/reportage, and photo illustration.
Mia Diehl has been the Director of Photography at Fortune Magazine, one of the leading publications featuring conceptual photography, for more than ten years. Diehl has won numerous awards while working at Fortune, including the World Press award for portrait single in 2001, and the gold portraiture award from the Society of Publication Designers in 2009.
During this workshop, Mia will present to the class how Fortune Magazine, under her visual leadership, approaches conceptual photography in their storytelling. After reviewing many different examples of successful conceptual photography, artists will be given an assignment to complete for the next day's workshop. The focus is as much about the strategy and though-process as it is about the execution. Mia will work with photographers going over their work, both the given assignment as well as previously completed work, to discuss what elements work and those that don't in their conceptual approach.
